Social workers investigate and assess patients’ requests and provide guidance

Cancer is a disease that affects patients both physically and socially. The Social Support Service of the Cyprus Anti-Cancer Society provides the opportunity for cancer patients to utilize the social support services and the programs addressed to them and their families.

Social workers investigate and assess patients’ requests, refer, advise and provide guidance. At the same time, they mobilize, where necessary, the appropriate state or community sectors.

Our Service is available at all district offices of the Society, at oncology centres, home institutions, other hospitals or at the patient’s home.

How Social worker’s contribution

Our well-trained social workers:

  • Investigate and assess the requests of patients and/or their family members.
  • Investigate and evaluate the social and/or financial problems that need to support.
  • Communicate on a regular basis with patients and their families and refer them to other professionals or services when necessary.
  • Advise the patients and their immediate families in regards to the benefits they are entitled during treatment.
  • Work with and connect patients with public and private oncology centres, the Ministry of Health, the Social Welfare Services Department, the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, and other community sectors, to better manage their problems.
  • Provide guidance to patients and their immediate families enabling them to use our Society’s Palliative Care services more effectively.
  • Provide emotional support to patients and their families in accordance with the code of ethics and conduct of the profession.
  • Work with the multidisciplinary team of Palliative Care.

How can I access social support services?

Patients are referred to the Social Service by their treating physician or requesting it directly from the Cyprus Anti-Cancer Society’s district offices.
